Let’s look around the gym this week. Notice anything?

It’s quieter. The January rush has faded. The "New Year, New Me" crowd has largely packed it in, leaving the squat racks and treadmills to the rest of us.

If you’re reading this, you’re likely still here. You didn't quit. But you might be feeling the drag.

There is a common misconception in the fitness world that people quit in February because they are lazy or lack willpower. As an engineer, I look at it differently. I don't see a character flaw; I see a mechanical failure.

People quit because of friction.

The Physics of Quitting

In engineering, friction is the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another. In the gym, friction is anything that makes the task harder than it needs to be.

Getting to the gym is hard enough. Once you are on the Stairmaster or treadmill for a 45-minute steady-state session, you shouldn't be fighting your environment, too. But that is exactly what most people do:

  • The Vibration: You prop your phone on the cup holder. It rattles every time you take a step.
  • The Slump: You look down at the console. Your shoulders roll forward. Your breathing restricts.
  • The Pain: Ten minutes in, your traps start to burn—not from the workout, but from holding your head up against gravity.

This is "Tech Neck," and it is the ultimate friction. It turns a dopamine-boosting workout into a headache-inducing chore. Eventually, the brain decides the pain isn't worth the gain, and you skip a day. Then two. Then you’re gone.

The Math: Why Your Neck Hurts While Running

Let’s get technical for a second.

Your head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds. When your cervical spine (neck) is aligned neutrally with your shoulders, your body handles that weight efficiently.

However, for every inch you tilt your head forward to look at a phone resting on a treadmill console, you add roughly 10 pounds of leverage pressure to your spine.

If you are looking down at a 45-degree angle to watch Netflix during your cardio, you aren't just carrying your head; you are putting nearly 50 pounds of force on your neck muscles.

Do that for 45 minutes, three times a week. That is not "grinding." That is repetitive stress injury waiting to happen.

Engineering a Solution
